Competitions without age limit
on: January 13, 2008, 07:19:03 PM
Would you suggest any piano competitions with good reputations open to 35+ years old? I just found some after googling but I guess there must be even more...

Last I checked, the international marbles tournament had no age limit either.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Now I KNOW this topic has been discussed before, but if you check the bios of the participants (finalists in particular) on most of these, you will notice that the word "amateur" is taken loosely.  Most of these folks have advanced degrees/study in performance, teach private lessons, etc.  They just say they are "teachers" or something else.  That's not the same to me.

So much music, so little time........

I guess the most prestigious competition for your age category is the Van Cliburn competition for outsanding amateurs. At least you get to perform in the same hall as the great Van Cliburn competition!!

It appears that entrance to the 2011 competition is already closed. All 75 competitors are already chosen. Isn't that weird?

How did you find out about this? It is strange, it is still basically 4 year to go.....

I agree with dinosarustale, most of the finalists have very advance music degrees. To me, thos people are not amateurs. There is one amateur competition that prohibit people with Music degree to compete. The competition name isBradshaw and Buono, I believe in NY.

Hi keyboardclass, sorry you feel this way. The Open Piano Competition has only just been launched  and clearly it cannot boast the heritage or history of more established competitions but we, the Directors, felt it was odd that London did not offer much in terms of piano competitions open to amateurs or semi-professionals.  I hope you will give us the time to provide more information.
Thanks, Marco

I think this sounds really cool!  There are a number of typos in the descriptions, which makes me feel a little like somebody would just take my money and run, but I absolutely love the overall concept, whether this particular competition is for real or not. :)

Here's kind of an interesting one, and though I gather there is not an upper age limit, there are conditions in terms of degrees held (or not) and what your occupation is, etc..  But, for those interested in competitions and desiring of something that isn't exactly the standard, this might be an interesting option:

Hi m1469, thanks for your encouragement, the website content has been uploaded just a few days ago, so bear with us a little longer while we go through everything. The deadline for applications is well into the future, march 31st 2012, and the competition itself is in 13 months.
Marco.
