Composition duel
on: January 20, 2008, 06:28:52 AM
Anyone want to duel in composing a short etude? I don't have training in composition so my writing is gonna suck, but I think I had an inspiration yesterday. Anyone?

Perhaps, What would be the time limit though? I really suck at time management, and my only inspiration is a deadline, but not one too close.

It sounds good, but I'll have to do a little research on etude form, I have neither written nor played one before.

Anyway, it sounds good. (no pun intended)

It depends on the deadline. When? I think I'd like something around a month, since I currently have no idea as to where do I find the time to do it...

By the way, do we have to be able to play it? ;D

A month is alright - although what I had in mind was something like a week or two, considering the amateurish nature of the duel ....

Since this is a composition duel I think performance shouldn't be required - I don't have much time to practice at the piano myself. But exporting to MIDI is easy if you use a notation software e.g. Sibelius.

Although I prefer writing by hand, let there be a MIDI (or something of that nature, there's a slight possibility I might actually play it...).

(I do not intend to work for a month, but within such a timeframe, there should occur a day or two that could be dedicated to this project.)

Deadline February 20th, then?

I got the melody and harmonic layout done - here is a snippet of the unfinished work. Thought I could get an early reaction or two.

BTW this is MIDI executed with Garritan Personal Orchestra. Pedal is a bit sloppy but that can be taken care of later......

Haha, I still havn't started. I have trouble getting inspiration and motivation.

I won't listen until I am finished either, otherwise I may subconsiouscly steal ideas.

Ok, I think I am going to have to pull out of this. At the moment I have neither the motivation nor the time. Stupid school.

However when I have more time and motivation, I will join other duels if they happen to be on.

I hear inspiration from Songs Without Words, and Scriabin too.  Quite pretty.   8)  Can we see the score?
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Thanks for the feedback guys! Here is the score - mind you, just ignore the dynamic, tempo, and pedal markings. They are there just to make the MIDI sound halfway human.

Okay, I think I'm supposed to post something, right?

Well, there is definitely a something. But, alas, not finished... and, I'm afraid, not even preview posting-ready, as I'm removed from the piano for several days already, etc., etc.
However, as soon as I get to a piano (Monday or Tuesday), I'll finish it. Unless there's carpet bombing or something.

Look, I am sorry to trip over the deadline like this, but the circumstances really -are- beyond my control...

Wow, congratulations Cygnusdei I really enjoyed your piece. Even more so Considering you said you had no training (not that I have either). I was kind of hoping for a grim/meaty/roaring resolutive chord at the end before and instead of the descending run, but I think it works well either way. I can't wait to have a go at composition myself some time soon seems fun!
Look forward to hearing the others' when they have time to upload.
