Need short very modern piece.
on: January 27, 2008, 06:19:37 PM
I have a presentation to do for a musical litterature class, wich deals with XXth and XXIst century music. I have to find a really modern work, way more than say prokofiev etc., even more than schoenberg if possible. The problem is I have allready lots of piece to work on, so I don't want a piece that requires too much work, and it should'nt be long, about 4 mins maximum ...

To give you an idea of my level currently, I'm doing for this year : Mendelssohn's variations sérieuses, bach toccata in e minor, scriabin etude op.42 no.5, prokofiev toccata, beethoven sonata op.7 and rachmaninoff concerto no.1 .

So I need piece in my range wich is very modern, kinda hard but not too much, and that I would have lots of information to give about it since I have to talk about the piece, the composer, and my interpretation of it. If you can join the score or any help to get it with your suggestion, that would be great!

Thanks

Antheil Sonata Sauvage came to my mind first. Or do you want something more recent? Ned Rorem has some miniatures and his etudes. The Boulez douze notations work too.

Wouldn't a sonata last for more than 4 minutes ? Remember it's got to be a short one.

The Antheil Sonata Sauvage is 8 minutes, so I guess it is a bit long. There is the Antheil Jazz Sonata on the other hand. Only 2 minutes.

Schirmer publishes many Antheil scores. Try contacting them, for many are available through special sale or hire only.

There are lots of composers on this forum, perhaps you could ask one of them if you could perform one of their pieces?

Xenakis's 1987 À R. (Hommage à Ravel), written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ravel's death? - it's barely 3 minutes in duration.

Again, any idea how to get the sheet music of the xenakis piece? If possible, a free PDF ? I guess gamingforce had it but their hard drives crashed ... not sure I want to buy it if I'm not sure I'm going to play that !

Alan Belkin just wrote a series of short études; you could pick one of those. They would be easy to present because each has a very defined purpose and you can contrast it with other études if need be. You can have a look here:

https://www.musique.umontreal.ca/personnel/Belkin/PDF/Etudes.pdf
Asked if he had ever conducted any Stockhausen,Sir Thomas Beecham replied, "No, but I once trod in some."

Durand-Salabert publishes everything by Xenakis. Everything should be easy to get a hold of. I do have a pdf, but it's under copyright.

If you want something very "anti-modern", look at the various miniatures by Valentin Silvestrov.

If you want recent sheet music, it is most unlikely that you will find it for free legally. Most of our contemporary composers aren't even dead yet.

Philip Glass wrote some nice piano pieces too, Metamorphosis for example. But that's very minimalistic and might not be a good example for recent music. (www.philippglass.com)

Same applies for Steve Reich, except for the URL. "Piano Phase" is a cool piece for two pianos.

Philip Glass and Steve Reich aren't what he is looking for I don't think. They are nowhere near as progressive as Xenakis and the like. Or even Antheil, who was way before them.

Sculthorpe has some great short works. In particular his 'Night' pieces. You can have a listen of some excerpts here: https://www.emusic.com/album/Ema-Alexeeva-David-Apell%C3%A1niz-Ananda-Sukarlan-Peter-Sculthorpe-Spirits-Of-Place-MP3-Download/11034244.html
He is a very modern Australian composer.
