Blumenfeld: Value Assessment
on: January 30, 2008, 12:34:53 PM
I listened to a Naxos recording of some of Blumenfeld's Etudes.  They sound gorgeous, although lacking somewhat in virtuosity in this recording.  Is that by nature of the music or nature of the performance?

How familiar are you with the Etudes-Fantasies, Op. 25 and Op. 48?

Thanks,

Daniel
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

I've listened to the same recording. I wouldn't say it was totally without virtuosity, but I agree at times it seemed like Blumenthal could have pushed the tempo more.

I'm not particularly familiar with the etudes-fantasies, but I have played the "sur le mer" etude. My take is the etudes are virtuosic, but at the same time Blumenfeld has a high degree of pianistic understanding, so often the technical requirements aren't as hard as they sound.  At the same time, they are not child's play either.
