Help me remember the name of this pianist...
on: February 13, 2008, 03:18:01 AM
There's a famous pianist/recording artist from the last 20 years or so who supposedly didn't start playing piano until he was an adult. Anyone know who I am talking about?

Volodos started when he was 15. Perhaps not him. Perhaps Raymond Lewenthal? I think he started around 20-25.

I don't think it could be Lewenthal; his career began in his twenties, but I think he started piano lessons in his teens. In any case, I'm pretty sure the bulk of his discography is from the 60s, and he died at the end of the 80s, which rules him out. I have an article on him in an old International Piano Quarterly which has more information, but I can't find it just now.

I thought Volodos when I read the initial question - checking the notes on his debut CD it says he did not devote himself seriously to the piano until he was 16.

Lazar Berman comes to mind...

Just out of curiousity, WHY???
As far as I know, he started concertizing since he was something like 5 years old.
