I was practicing on a Kawai upright yesterday. Boy - everything sounds good until you (try) to use the pedal. Sustain almost has no effect on the low register! I don't remember having this issue on my old Yamaha.

Baldwin, Yamaha, Heintzman (older models), Petrof... they're all reliable. Happy shopping.

Then it probably needs adjusting. Get inside and adjust it - you don't need any tools or skills. You'll see what needs doing.

The Yamaha U1 has a good reputation among Piano Technicians according to Larry Fine in his "Piano Book" I reccomend you get your hands on a copy. It will be a valuble resource to aid in your search even after you find your piano it provides imformation that will pay dividends.

I used to own a Chickering Upright Grand from the late 19th century. What a fabulous piano that was. They were made with a cast-iron frame, unlike most uprights, and the bass strings were a lot longer than most uprights. Only problem was it weighed a ton (well, half a ton) and was a real bear to move, especially if stairs were involved!

But unfortunately a quick Google suggests you might not be able to get one for $6000 any more. I sold mine for $1600 because I was stupid.

Charles Walter = the best uprights for the money. I recently got one for under 10k and it's a lovely piano! If you can find a dealer in your area try them out! You won't be sorry

You could go for a Boston Upright Piano. It is a very nice one. ^^
