Why do you think this particular Sonata is so underplayed compared to Nos. 3, 6, 7 and 8?

I don't think so. It's probably more played than 8.

Recently it's become very popular. I know of 4 different people who were studying it this past year and Garrick Ohlsson has included it as part of his recital program for this year.
