Composition/Notation Freeware?
on: February 26, 2008, 09:22:44 PM
Hey,
I know this is probably asking a bit too much, but are there any rudimentary programs out there that would allow midi input and have a basic platform for composition/notation and such?
I just want it for help during theory practice at the moment visualising both the keyboard but also recreating various patterns etc and seeing them in the sheet. For this play back would also be a necessary feature.
Thanks in advance for any help on the matter.

Edit: I have managed to find something for those of you who may alos be interested in this. It's called Finale NotePad 2008 and has all the features I desired. I am not sure where the catch or major feature loss it yet, but they do offer other expensive products.

I have Finale Notepad, but most of the time I use Noteworthy Composer for what you describe.  It is closer to imitating a sequencer, and much more user friendly.  I even paid the $30 or so to upgrade to the shareware version.

Yes, it does midi input from my keyboard, and output if I want.  I've also used it to burn CDs for church services, back when i wasn't skilled enough to play anything.  And I've used it to teach choir members their part to a new piece.  I do the four parts on separate staffs, set their part to f while the rest get mp, and save it as MIDI.  It emails in about 8 k, MIDI is very sparing of memory.
