Buying an electric keyboard; need advice
on: March 24, 2008, 01:59:27 AM
I'm a teenage piano player, and the current piano I play on is just horrible. Besides being terribly out of tune and never holding a tuning, it is a Depression-era entry level piano. The pinblock is shot, the keys are chipped, and overall it is just a nightmare.

I'm by no means an excellent pianist. I play for fun and my greatest conquests have been the inventions, maple leaf rag, and the minute waltz. While my ear is not good, even I find playing my piano painful. So, the obviously, I need a new one.

The problem is that tracking down and purchasing a suitable acoustic piano will take many months. I'm very involved in other activities, such as school band and sports, and I do not have the time to perform a good search. Furthermore, it would have to be extremely inexpensive.

Would an electric keyboard be the solution? They are relatively cheap and always in tune. Before, I had not given them consideration because of the poor tone quality and bad key "feel", but my friend has a Yamaha P-60 I quite like. The only problem is that P-60s are discontinued.

So, should I grab a keyboard or hold out for an acoustic? And which model of keyboard would be appropriate for a bare-bones practice piano? I will not be performing or messing around with any electronic features, except possibly recording to my computer.

Electric pianos and keyboards have come a long way. Weighted keyboards (I like Yamaha and M-audio keyboards and controllers) are remarkably responsive and have nice sound samples. However, watch the price. You should be able to get something decent for much less than a new apartment size piano.

If the quality that you need is approaching the price of a small upright, then my personal choice would still be for the acoustical instrument.

Take a look here:

They have a forum devoted entirely to Digitals. Enough material to keep you reading for a month without eating or sleeping.

I was reading the chang book last night.

Interestingly enough, he recommends not buying an upright at all.  Buy a digital then save for a grand.  I'm not sure if he's right but it's worth a read, anyway.

Well, I'm a teenager too and I mainly use a keyboard. Although it is different, I've adjusted to it and they are not too bad to use.

Trust me...you can't be a worst pianist than me! LOL

You could buy a Digital Ensemble Piano.. So that would solve the purpose of a keyboard and a piano. I started with playing the keyboard but then now, I prefer the piano more!
I am a teenager too.. And I am bad with the piano as well.. but I love music and enjoy it..
As for a model.. you could purchase CP136.. Kawai..

buy a keyboard where you can play the pieces you want. listen to the harmony, and the sound of the keyboard. ;)
