Earl Wild Transcriptions
on: October 08, 2002, 01:39:30 PM

Hi

Do any of you guys know Earl Wild's 7 Virtuoso Etudes on Gershwin songs?I think these pieces would be great for encores and would like to get a hold of the score but the only place I know that has it is in the U.S. and it would cost me $105 to get it.Does anyone know any European publishers that do these or even beter somewhere on the net?
p.s. Robert Henry is D'MAN Iwas looking for that Horowitz transcription for ages.Thanks.

David

Unfortunately I don't know an alternate or cheaper source.  Speaking of Wild's transcriptions, are you familiar with his transcriptions of selected Rachmaninoff Songs?  They are extraordinary and very close to Rachmaninoff's idiom.  I have a couple here, "Floods of Spring" and "In the Silent Night". I've played the actual song accompianments to both, but have not yet been able to make time to study these transcriptions.  Some day!

I'm afraid they aren't published in the UK.

But a word of caution - I would recommend you buying it in a set, or getting the individuals hard bound  ;) I bought them individually and already two of them have no binding coil left  >:(

Which ones are you/were you going to learn?
Have you heard them being played?

After seeing Vanessa Latarche play 'Fascinating Rhythm' on the ABRSM diploma video, I so enjoyed the piece that I now have the set of etudes, and I'm learning 5 of them for my BA dissertation this march  ::)

Let me know if you're also learning them. I know of a few concert pianists who use them as Encores.

They're bloody hard to play at Earl Wild's tempi.

Those Earl Wild Gershwin transcriptions are, er, wild. Believe it or not, I have heard a pianist using them (possibly slightly modified - I wasn't following the score) to accompany a singer in the songs. I can't remember the pianist's name, which is a bit dumb of me because I got to know him a bit around that time, but the singer was Dame Gwyneth Jones.

I've got photocopies of Wild's manuscript of two Rachmaninov transcriptions, the Vocalise and Spring Waters. They're almost legible....
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.
