Christopher O'reilly
on: May 06, 2004, 01:42:02 AM

Has anyone ever heard of this Pianist? What do you think of him? I've never heard any of his recordings before, but he has numerous CD's out. The reason I ask is that he's coming to our island in a couple of weeks to host a event involving young talented musicians ( no pianists, just violinists and singers) and my teacher is trying to see if I can play for him and get his opinion on some things. I hope I play well!

yeah hes great, he is creating an alternate revolution to the likes of maksim.
he doesnt dumb down anything, and he rules.

i ahevnt heard him play any non-transcriptions, but what i have heard - he has a great sound and an appealing emotionality.

Is this young musicians event FROM THE TOP?  I listen to that show every week on the radio AND I LOVE IT!  Check out the show's website: www.fromthetop.org
And check out Chris's website: www.christopheroriley.com
If you have the opportunity to see a live presentation of From the Top by all means do it!

It's not exacly that... but sort of

There is a music/ arts festival down here ( called BRAVO! CELEBRATE THE ARTS and he's hosting this event which invloves young talented musicians. A few young violinists and a couple of singers if I'm not mistaken. He will be playing some as well. So it's very similar.

Yes, he hosts From the Top.  I listened to the last half hour of the show today.  He isn't a virtuoso compared to the likes of Maksim (I'm joking! ;D).

I didn't like his playing today, the last solo he did before the end of the show.  The bass was off somewhat, like it didn't flow.  Otherwise, considering all the other Sunday's he plays, he's usually spot on.

And he plays in every episode of the show and has performed Radio Head on it, too.

I have the chance to hear him in solo recital soon... but it will be a 2 hour drive and a motel stay.  Should I go?  He's playing the music of Radiohead.  I have never listened to much popular music, mainly classical so I run the risk of not liking it.

What do you think?

You can listen to excerpts of him playing Radiohead here. Then you can decide.

I was surprised when I heard him play Radiohead.  It didn't sound punk rock or whatever Radiohead plays.  It had the style of classical music!  Though I can't say this for all of their works as I've only heard O'Reilly play just a few.

Outta curiosity, what do you think of the show on May 10-24 (https://www.fromthetop.org/rs_pages/rs_listen.html), specifically the pianist, Andrew Rosenblum?

I heard him play at a music festival in Cape May, NJ about 6 or 7 years ago. It was a terrific recital. The second half of the program consisted of the Diabelli Variations. It was an absolute knockout performance.
