Yamaha Keyboard Pedalling Issue
on: May 26, 2008, 09:03:13 PM
I recently purchased this keyboard: https://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11188564&search=yamaha&Mo=1&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Sp=S&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=yamaha&Ntt=yamaha&No=0&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1
I played on it for a little over a month and got started with school and started rock climbing and piano was at the back of my mind.  I came back to it about a month ago, and the pedal does not work properly, which is strange because the first day I came back, it was working.  The problem is that the input is inverted (i.e. when I hit the pedal, it tells it to turn damper off, and when I am not hitting the pedal, it is telling it to go on).  I checked the settings and couldn't find anything that would fix the problem.  This is a serious issue as I do not have enough money, and won't for the next couple of years or so, to get an actual piano.  If anyone has any information that might solve the problem, or at least point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Different brands use different polarities for their footpedals, if you can't find a setting to reverse the polarity (look for 'pedal polarity' or something similar) on either the keyboard or a switch to toggle it on the pedal itself then your best bet is to get hold of a different pedal made either by Yamaha or a different brand with a polarity toggle.  There are other brands will work but I don't know them by memory, you'd have to talk to someone who does.

The instruction booklet says that if you put your foot on the pedal while turning on the power of the piano, the polarity can change with the result of sustaining when you do not press the pedal and vice versa.

I would try to start the piano while my foot is on the pedal again, and see what happens. It is not working properly now anyway, so better give this a chance.
