Talking about underrated composers.
on: May 08, 2004, 02:32:29 PM
Hey,
Does anyone know the composer Kabalevski?... - and if you do what do you think of him? I like his Sonatine in C and Variation on a folk song (can't remember opus, but it's quite popular I think)
Looking forward to hear from you!

i think he wrote mostly works for children - i've heard a few, they're good for kids - simple sound, without raising too many problems, just what a begginer needs.

I find Grieg's piano music to be quite underrated and underplayed - that is, except for the concerto and three or four of the lyrical pieces.

Yeah, Grigs piano music is very underrated.
Especially his lyric pieces are very great!

I think Gottschalk's music is highly underrated. Many have compared it to "saloon music" which I totally disagree with. For the most part, much of his music is extremely difficult if not technically, rhythmically. Considering the time period of his life, he actually was way ahead of his time. He's one of my very favorite composers, and I really wonder why he is not more popular. Does anyone else like/dislike Gottschalk?

Kabalevsky is NOT underrated. At least everyone i know plays tons of his music. When i was little i played one of his sonatinas, and they are easy. But his sonatas are awesome and they are more virtuosic.

What about -
John Field
Liadov
Arensky
any of the Bachs except J.S
Enesco (his 3rd sonata kicks arse!)
but NOT Alkan in this forum.

I would also agree that Gottschalk is an underrated composer. What I've heard of him I find very interesting-maybe some day I'll learn some of his works.

OMG! Gotts is so underrated, i agree. Ive played like multiple duets by him... Le Bananier is a nice song, so is his Terantella duet. He's got those souvinier's too.
Mozkowski anyone? Lutoslawski anyone? Glazunov anyone? Underated!
