What are you playing/learning at the moment?

I've noticed other forums have something like a 'what are ...... at the moment' thread, so here is one for here.

At the moment I'm beginning to learn Gnossienne No. 1 by Satie, and Sarabande from Pour le PIano by Debussy.
I'm halfway through learning Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte by Ravel, and I'm also attempting to learn the Pathetique 1st and 3rd mvts. (Already learnt the 2nd.)

So, how about everyone else?

Thanks for asking. I've been working on the Goldberg Variations for almost a year. I'm only up to the dreaded #5, so it's going to take a while to get through them.

Also working on some Chopin mazurkas, currently Op. 63/3.

Next? Maybe Webern's Variations. Or I might try to work up some of the numbers in the Gershwin Songbook. Or a Haydn sonata... any suggestions?

Not learning anything properly atm, but I occasionally have a plow through some of Rzewski's TPUWNBD. I've been meaning to start some proper work on it.

Ok chick, here it goes: My teacher made me play other stuff, and put what we were working on, on hold, so this is what we are doing right now

Toccata in E Minor, BWV 914 by Bach. If I can convince my teacher, I will learn the 3rd Movement of the Apassionata, if not, Op. 90, by Beethoven. As for Romanticism, I am playing the 1st Ballade of Chopin, his Etudes Op. 10 No. 4. and yes, I have a death wish, Op. 25 No. 6(Thirds), and the Nocturne Op. 48 No. 2 in F# minor. And finally for a concerto, I am learning Chopin's 1st Concerto

First, Thal, it's a Bach-Freidman transcription. Original composer goes first.

I am playing Chopin Op. 10 No. 4, Bach-Kempff Nun Komm Der Heiland Herr, and Scriabin Op. 8 No. 12, alternate version.

In the fall, when I get my new teacher at a new school, I will start some more sizeable pieces.

Cziffra transcription of 5th Brahms Hungarian Dance, would like to perform it later this year. Revising the 5th Liapunov transcendental etude and writing a paraphrase on La Somnambula, because it amuses me to do so

A bit of a "beginner," but am working very very hard - I am so completely obsessed at this point that it's disgusting. The way I look at it, I have a whole life ahead of me, and I'll only get better w/ age - I enjoy relishing in the so-called "easy" pieces of the piano world that some would scoff at. They're glorious.

On another note, I'm starting Bach's Two-Part Inventions. Excited!

well..my exams comming so i have these pieces to really polish up, just 4 weeks more to go:

Poulenc flute sonata
Schumann 1st violin sonata
Verdi 'La Traviata'
Tchaikovsky 1st concerto
Stravinsky 'Petrushka' (orchestral piano part)
About half a ton of other stuff, all sorts, lone sonata movements, short pieces, songs and arias, etc. etc.

This is definitely where accompanists have the most fun! I estimate 20 hours' repertoire for May and June, and that's just the stuff I'm playing in front of an audience in that period.

I haven't taken lessons since January, and I'm still somewhat of an intermediate beginner in my playing ability. I know how to count music and such, but for the summer I will be learning:

Minuets K.1 - 6 -- Mozart
Allegro K1 -- Mozart
3 Minuets, Musette, and March from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena -- Bach
Op. 100, Nos. 1, 2, and 3 -- Burgmuller
Spinning Song -- Elmenreich
Waltz in B Flat -- Schubert

I'm going through the Mozart and Bach at a pretty rapid rate. I'm learning about one of those pieces per week, so it shouldn't take me too long. After two days of learning it, I can practically play the Spinning Song perfectly, and I've just begun sight reading the Schubert Waltz, and it's very easy. The same goes for the Burgmuller. If I finish all the material by Mozart, Bach, and Burgmuller, I will add:

Op. 100 Nos. 5, 14, and 19
Sonatina Op. 55 No. 1 -- Kuhlau
Sonatina Op. 36 No. 1 -- Clementi

And when I get tired of those, sometimes I sightread Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 just for fun. I may add that to the list, depending on how fast I get through the current pieces.

4. "Revolutionary" Etude Op.10-12 by Chopin
5. La Campanella by Listz

I heard people saying that Picture at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky is very nice. But me myself never heard the piece.

so any comment about this piece?? Is it hard?

Glosas IX, X and XI - Fernando Lopes-Graça

Going to re-study "Un Sospiro" - Liszt and Étude Op. 65 no. 3 - Scriabin for a masterclass.
Probably will add other portuguese work, "Sursum corda" and "Il Lamento" after the exams.

Also have: Max Bruch's Op. 83 Pieces, Schumann's Fairy Tales and other portuguese work for Clarinet, Viola and Piano. Two final year recitals to play with a mezzo (hmmm... Brahms, Falla, Rossini, ...) and a flutist (Jolivet, Dahl, Mouquet, CPE Bach, ...) and also work as an accompanist (lots and lots of duos repertoire).

Oh, dear, I'm sorry to hear that. Most of Jolivet's flute stuff I've had to has been pretty unpleasant pianisitically and aurally not worth the effort.

But the other stuff sounds more attractive!

my teacher picked new pieces with me when I was at her home the other day...at last.

so this is my new list or rather new pieces that I will start learning as soon as i'm done with ARCT

Bach Italian Concerto (before P+F's)
Bach Well Tempered Clavier BK 1(at least 6 different preludes& fugues)

Beethoven Sonata in F major op.14 no.2 after which I should learn at least one or 2 more before moving on to Schubert

I'm doing Gnomenreign and Un Sospiro right now

for a short recital next week

I'm also beginning Liebermann's Gargoyles (I'm hoping to learn the entire suite), and starting with #1 and #3... these f'ing pieces are so tough; I don't see how they could be more awkward, extremely awkward stretches.

Shchedrin's Basso Ostinato... I can't begin to describe how awesome this piece is. Very strange repeated note rhythms in the right hand, but this piece sounds so sinister and I have honestly not heard it until a month ago, partly the reason why it sparked such an interest

I'm going to start the second movement of Scriabin's 2nd piano sonata; I'm finishing the first now, and want to have the entire sonata.

Among those, I was at my sister's dance recital tonight and heard the 'Valse D'amelie'; very interesting piece, as well as the others by Yann Tiersen. I think I'm just gonna play that on the side (seems sight readable for the most part), my sister would probably appreciate it.

I just started learning 'Reverie' by Miriam Hyde. As soon as my piano teacher photocopies Debussy's Arabesque 1 I'm gonna learn that as well.

Invention 13 BWV 784
Sinfonia 2 BWV 787

Doing a lot of listening to source other pieces I should learn. Maybe a Chopin Waltz. Also I'm thinking about a potential audition in November audition and what I should learn for that. Might dig up some pieces from past exams that I swore I'd never play again.

Teacher is going off island so he told me to study Ravel Jeux D'Eau, Tempest Sonata, and a Rach prelude, don't remember which one though.

I just learned Bortkiewicz Capriccio.

Prokofiev Sonata #3, Choosing a Liszt Concert Etude or a Paganini Etude. Any suggestions? I was pretty much set loose to pick a piece. "You know the repertoire, and you have the technique. Go to the library, listen, and go for it."

I was thinking of gnomenreigen, the G minor etude, the E-flat, or the A Minor paganini etudes. Thoughts?

I believe, Daniel, that this was a simply inquiry as to what you are playing atm, not what you intend to play/want to know what you SHOULD play. Maybe some Prokofiev? Oh, oops, I forgot, you've. . . already. . . done. . . that. . . My bad. I'll only respond to what I'm already educated about. Forget learning or intelligent discussions.
