Theory Book

What is a good beginning theory book - modes, harmony, counterpoint, etc. leading to simple composition?  Also, what theory books are used in conservatories, and what preparation should I get to be able to understand them?

I like Barbara Wharram's "Elementary Rudiments of Music".  The book is complete with diagrams, worksheets, exercises, you name it.  It's a great book for the most ignorant of students (like me).  The best way to do composition is to learn the chords, all key signatures( and when they are appropriate), scales, etc...and to get practice writing out music on manuscript, try copying music from published sheet music.
