struggle with chopin prelude 8
on: July 09, 2008, 06:18:24 AM
hello pianostreet members

I play piano OK however this is the first time I need to overcome a difficulty such as this one in this incredible prelude. yet it is very simple: the right hand is in 4 times whereas the left hand is in 3 times. I can't set my mind free to have both hands play independently in their respective timing and this is fundamental in this prelude.

there is a good performance that articulates the playing of this prelude there:

how did you eventually face this problem?

Many thanks,

Eventually you just have to know each one and listen to them separately, but in the meantime it never hurts to hone your mathematical rhythmic skills:

1        2         3         4
|  |  |  |  |  |  |  |  |  |  |  |
1            2            3

Count the inner lines aloud (there are twelve of them) and line up the left hand and right hand parts as indicated!

Many thanks. I have been doing this lately but can you pick up speed with this method? I am playing at a tempo 25% of my expectations. Or maybe my expectations are way too high!

Just play it like this - that's precise enough  ;)
If it doesn't work - try something different!

The quaver in the left hand is on beat with the 5th note in the right.
I usually end up spreading notes in left all over the bar - not playing them fast enough.
I think it helps not to focus too much on the notes themselves when you're playing hands together.
