But there's so many different kinds of rock music though.  Can't your rock school tell you what you're supposed to practice?

Being a big Smashing Pumpkins fan, I used to be able to play a lot of their songs on piano.  But Smashing Pumpkins is not the first band that comes to mind when people talk about rock music, is it?

You should probably wait until August and give the school a chance. I developed my improvising skills by listening to and sightreading as much rock and pop as I could get my hands on. In my opinion, the more you're exposed to it, the more it will absorb into your playing style. Good luck.

i actually prefer to play jazz and rock than classical music. if you're just starting, you should probably listen to some duke ellington, he's like my favorite jazz pianist and in his orchestra, improvising was very common.
in rock music, there's jerry lewis! sorry, he was the first one that came to my mind...

I think the best way to learn music like rock/funk/jazz is by listening, and playing by ear copying and transcribing.  Pick a rock cd you like that has piano parts and learn them by ear.. Learning to play "hey jude" or "let it be" by ear is not that hard, but you get a lot out learning them from the recording and playing along with them... you can't really learn things like groove and style by reading notes on the pages.

Its kind of interesting to see how we are all 'trained' to learn music through books and not by ear.  Because most music outside the classical world are learned by ear or  through imitation.. in some ways using books seems counterintuitive.

Have you ever considered checking out www.Youtube.com? There is tons of rock, boogie on there to both listen to and learn from.
Many (I feel) are very amateur, others quite professional. Do a search on boogie, rock piano lessons etc.
Check out the following links, you will see where I am coming from:

I suggest you click on the link of the person that posted the video, they usually post more than one.
I download them, convert the file and burn them to DVD and play them on a computer next to my piano hooked up to a good stereo systym. Its great fun.

Hope that helps.

A favourite of mine is Zilvan Zingg, check this out
