Best ways to revive/re-learn pieces?
on: August 06, 2008, 11:49:53 PM
Hey,
I am currently in the process of reviving some of my previous repetoire which has suffered neglect and is no longer complete, however I find this process a daunting task, not due to difficulty but due to the fact that I have already learned it once and it seems less exciting when I could be learning new things. Just wondering if anyone had any advice on ways to make it more pleasent?

The best way to revive a piece of music is to learn it from scratch again as though you haven't already known it.  Depending on how long ago you learned it/them, and the purpose you had originally learned it for, you may have a lot of new stuff to bring to it and take from it.  If it was long enough ago that you forgot it, that is best !  If you loved the piece(s), there is always more you can find out about it and you are in a place now where you can take it to a deeper level.  When it's a piece that is loved, taking it deeper, learning more about it, and getting to know it all over again is pretty exciting !

Start from scratch.  You've changed.  You're different.  Just treat as a regular piece and relearn it.  Of course, since you already have a lot down, you'll go much faster.  But go for the ideal and don't let previous things hang you up if it can be avoided.

i'm re-learning old pieces too. it depends on how difficult they are for you.

don't expect it well after the first try. do it slowly, like a new piece. when you are able to play it well again. it really feels good!

Thanks for the good adive (as always) guys!

It sounds ridiculous but I hadn't even considered treating it as learning a normal piece, instead thinking I could just patch up the old areas. I'm sure areas will happen faster than others i.e. the parts I already know but I shall try hard not to expect too much of myself all at once which is my current problem, and keep it slow to begin with.

Thanks again.

Play one hand each, and slowly... Kind of as if it was a new piece
