Rach 3 cuts?
on: May 19, 2004, 04:59:17 AM
I believe Rachmaninoff himself sanctioned several cuts for performance of his 3rd concerto, does anyone know what they are exactly? It would be very useful to me. Thanks!

Rachmaninoff certainly does made quite large cuts in his recording, he actualy reduces the length by about 10 mins! I don't know exactly where they are but I know one of them is definately the second playing of the second subject in the last movement.

1st. movement
2 bars after fig10 to fig11
2nd movt.
6 bars after fig27 to 8th bar after fig28
3rd. movt
fig 45 to 9th bar after fig 46
2 bars after fig 52 to fig 54.

In the second movement a -probably better - cut is sometimes made from 6 after 27 to anacrusis of 2nd beat in fig 28.
Also the orchestral 4bars before 37 is sometimes cut to 38.
Andre Watts in his recording cuts the whole of the section between 52 and 59 in the last movement!

I find the first movement cut to be particularly annoying because it is one of the more beautiful sections of the movement and also sounds abrupt.
