Well, not all girls that are pretty can sing and not all girls that can sing are pretty.

I did not think the Chinese were as worried about apearances as some other Countries.

I think they decided that a less-pretty girl simply wasn't going to be able to hold the attention of 4 billion viewers.

It is pathetic.

It shows the perverse lengths to which the Chinese authorities go to project the desired image.

It also shows how group solidarity is more prized than rewarding the efforts of the individual.

In a free country, the little girl who won the singing competition would have gotten to sing.

Nationalism is a disease.

In England, she wouldn't have even won it.

Thal, I look Chinese... That hurt. :'(

On another thread, they say Lang Lang's performance was recorded. Perhaps this synching is a national custom?

I feel bad for the girl who did the actual singing.  She is a musician, is she not? She will have put hundreds of hours of effort to bring her singing to that level, and she deserves the reward of performing and being acknowledged for her achievement.  But because of her appearance she is hidden from view, and another girl is given the acclaim.  That other girl did not work hard to have the face she has, the way the first girl worked hard to be able to sing as she does.  This is very unfair.

yes but I think everyone is failing to grasp the fact that she IS being rewarded for her effort, as billions of people around the world heard her voice. I would think that's enough for hundreds of hours of practice. So we can't see her face, that's not a big deal. (actually even that's not true any more, there are photos of the real singer, and we know her name, etc.)

If all of the albums of pianists X were actually recorded by pianist Y, does the fact that the albums sell provide due credit to Y in any way?

I would have thought that this issue was pretty straight forward.  ::)

Depends on how you look at it. I for one wouldn't mind if say, I had recordings that were sold but were either pirated or sold in another's name. Unless I were poor and I badly needed the money, I'm just happy that my music reaches someone. Yes, this is actually my age-old argument in favor of piracy. I believe everyone has the right to access art, not only the rich and more informed. If most people are confused and don't know that I'm the one who did the recordings, then that's their problem. I'd find it really funny if that were the case, won't you guys?  ;)

It also shows how group solidarity is more prized than rewarding the efforts of the individual.

It is not as if it is a fact that that is a bad thing.

This is, of course, the basic plot of “Singing in the Rain”. ;)
