ABRSM Gradings
on: August 19, 2008, 01:12:16 PM
I would like some ABRSM gradings for the following pieces:

Bach: Keyboard Concerto No 1 in Dm BWV 1052 1st mvmt
Mozart: Sonata in Am K311 1st Mvmt
Mozart: Sonata in Cm K457 1st Mvmt
Scriabin: Prelude No 11 Op 11 in B
Scriabin: Etude in C#m Op2 No1
MUssorgsky: The Old Castle, Bydlo, The Catacombs, Cum Mortuis in Lingua Mortua, The Great Gate of Kiev all from Pictures at an Exhibition.

Thanks

And please, no complaints about difficulty being relative. I'm asking for ABRSM gradings, not how difficult each piece is. However... If anyone could point out any particular technical hurdles in the Bach concerto movement that I should watch out for I'd be most grateful :)

you know, not everything is able to be scaled to abrsm... the mussorgsky is past g8 for example...
Working on: Schubert - Piano Sonata D.664, Ravel - Sonatine, Ginastera - Danzas Argentinas

well... it's the truth, whether you like the answer or not. Don't post if you aren't going to like the replies, or ignore them. Grow up a bit and stop asking questions if you already know the answers...
If you care to search, there are also many threads about this kind of thing, as well as an Excel file with many approximate gradings on it (although many are quite wrong).
Plus, it's down to the individual, and how passionate you are about learning the piece.
I was the first one to reply. Probably because the other members don't have the patience to bother replying to this type of post. They're annoying, and hardly constructive, especially when the OP has this kind of attitude.
Please, if you want to start a difficulty thread, at least make it more general so other people can benefit, rather than extremely specific to your situation.
That said, I'm probably as guilty as you when I first started posting here, and I probably got a similar response as this post. So, I apologise. But be aware.

does it matter what grade the piece is?

if you like the piece and you feel you can tackle it then do it,

the grades are only important in the actuall exams

the Scriabin Etude was on grade 8 syllabus a few years ago and the Preludes op 11 are all on the dipabrsm syllabus. i think i saw the Mozart K457 on either dipabrsm or lrsm but thats the whole sonata.

but i agree with healdie- who cares what grade a piece is? if you like something get a hold of the music and have a sight read- thats the best way of telling if somethings approachable or beyond your current ability.

ABRSM Grades (unless otherwise stated):

Bach: Keyboard Concerto No 1 in Dm BWV 1052 1st mvmt
Not graded by the ABRSM (they only grade solo music and up to grade 8 ) – well above grade 8

Mozart: Sonata in Am K311 1st Mvmt
Grade 7

Mozart: Sonata in Cm K457 1st Mvmt
Grade 8

Scriabin: Prelude No 11 Op 11 in B – to my knowledge not graded by ABRSM: Grade 7/8 (my subjective grading)

Scriabin: Etude in C#m Op2 No1
Grade 7 (not ABRSM though: Chesterian Series of Graded Piano Music – roughly similar to ABRSM)

Mussorgsky: As far as I know those have not been graded by ABRSM (therefore, my subjective gradings)
The Old Castle – Grade 6
Bydlo – grade 5
The Catacombs – grade 4
Cum Mortuis in Lingua Mortua – grade 6/7
The Great Gate of Kiev – grade 6/7
