Tarrega (for thalbergmad)
on: August 21, 2008, 12:19:58 AM
Hey Thal--recorded this on my phone (with horrendous sound), while I was warming up for the Husum concert; at least gives you an idea about how it's supposed to go--I'll let you know if/when my friend puts the score on Sibelius.

Koji,

It is beautiful.

I'd love to have a score, if it is possible.

Best, M

I am well touched that you should do this for me. Thanks hugely.

You keep alive the fading romantic tradition of the pianist/transcriber.

You are the Usain Bolt of pianists. Fast, lots of class and a fair bit ahead of the rest.

Come to think of it, it should'nt be very hard to play the piece by ear, since you allready see the hands pretty well as a hint...

Ok ... this is freaky

While I was downloading this, I was in the kitchen making dinner. My son is watching a movie about a dog.

When this came up & started playing, I thought it was guitar music in the movie, LOL...

But - from a couple rooms away - I was convinced there was a guitar, *and* a piano... I wasn't watching the video.

How totally great! Thanks for posting that. (even if it was for Thal, nice to share it with all of us too) :)

Oh please, please, Koji, could you do a recording with good sound, just audio?
You're great, man!
My only little remark is that it could be ok if you don't keep the LH legato all the way but, well it's your transcription, who am I to tell...

This works so well on piano!! Please share the sheet music with us when it is available. Did you play this as an encore in Husum? I hope you were happy with your concert. Did you attend other concerts? This evening MAH is playing... Next year I definitely want to make it for the festival, it's one of the most interesting I have heard of so far.
P.S. Funny "1st person" perspective of the video...  :)

I actually did end up playing it as an encore, which people thankfully seemed to enjoy.  It might end up on the Danacord compilation CD, but I'm probably going to record it for my own transcription cd in any event.
Unfortunately I had to leave before hearing Marc (although I wasn't too keen on all that Weissenberg stuff he was going to play); I would HIGHLY recommend you attend the festival next year--it's an absolutely wonderful atmosphere with terrific pianists/programs, and a charming, historic town--was very inspiring.

this is soo cool.  i meant to comment earlier as i enjoyed being able to watch the hands.  too bad, so little right hand.  you had some technique going there for the repeated notes.  i was trying to explain this to someone else.  anyways - you are the man. (as you already might guess).

i know nothing of the piece or composer.

who is usain bolt?  i don't get it. is he a weightlifter?

Usain Bolt is the new amazing world recordman for 100m and 200m and therefore gold medalist in both disciplines - lol.

The piece is Francisco Tarrega's, originally written for the guitar. actually it's THE guitar romantic piece par excellence, comparable to something like Fantaisie Impromptu for the Piano.

And Koji is indeed THE man.

very interesting!  i thought it sounded like a guitar piece - and yet it sounds great on the piano.  must be a very precise piece or one wouldn't pull it off very well.  ie repeated notes.

thanks for the info about usain bolt and also the composer.

koji - do you think, in your spare time, you could sort of compose a self-made dual between thalberg and liszt all in one piece and played by the same person?  a sort of renactment (like the battle of gettysburg) of the major players and their styles?  just wondering.

Yes indeedy, although I think the Liszt "Niobe" Fantasie was not on the album, if memory serves correct.

Not sure what you meant by 'bad' whether it's the difficulty or the intresequial quality of the piece  ;D.
If it's difficulty, that's right indeed, 'Recuerdos' is not that hard on the guitar but sounds as such.
The comparison I made is just about what both pieces represent in the two instruments respective mythology.

The guitarists I've spoken with wouldn't quite agree with that assessment.

It was on this one maestro.

The "Niobe" could do with a better recording, as all the ones i have heard are rather lacking.

My mistake!  Sorry.  I've never really warmed to the Niobe, but the Thalberg "Moses" on the other hand.....

Well, to cut a long story short, i found it 1200 foot down a slatemine in North Wales. I was just picking up my shovel and there it was.

You might want to try Amazon though, but the playing is not exactly what we would call romantic reckless abandon.

Hey don't get me started at making this thread a guitar forum !  ;D
Of course I'm not saying Recuerdos is easy, but it's nowhere as difficult as Villa-Lobos' etudes or even some Fernando Sor's etudes or waltzes.
Comparing difficulties on two different instruments probably makes no sense, but the Fantaisie Impromptu on the piano definitely involves technical challenges much nastier than Recuerdos on the guitar.

koji, may I say that I preferred the other perspective a bit... it's just because the toilet and the shorts somehow hamper the evocation of the majestic Alhambra....

P.S. just kidding. ;) But better sound would definitely do more justice to your playing!
