sonata suggestions
on: August 21, 2008, 11:51:31 PM
i'm entering a competition in november where have to play the first movement of any sonata.
ive entered last year and the year before and EVERYONE plays Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert . i want to do something different so am looking for a Romantic/20th century sonata to use. its just the first movement and has to be under 7 mins long.
any suggestions?

You might look into Medtner and see if he would work
for you.

Why not schumann G minor(2nd)? Or Chopin 2nd without repeats? I actually just love the first movement of Brahms 2nd sonata! I think this would be a great idea also. I guess prokofiev 7th would be a good idea if you're up for it ... if not there's allways the 2nd... or the 3rd if you can play it under 7 mins

I'm learning Prok 7 now... and 1st mvt under 7 minutes is impossible; I dont think even Richter could pull that! ...well I guess unless you play the andantino as presto or something crazy like that. Prokofiev 3rd Sonata is definitely doable around 7 minutes and its an excellent piece.
I'm not sure about the Chopin suggestion either. I love the piece, but it's incredibly hard-- for a competition (where 'everyone plays Beethoven, Mozart') I would stick with something less demanding than Chopin 2.
It you want to look at something that's TOTALLY overlooked, imo, (and kind of random) is the Stravinsky Sonata (1924)-- neo-classical and totally delightful. But then again, people dont take it seriously.

It really depends on how well you can play.
If you are good enough for the 2nd chopin sonata, go for it.

Paderewski perhaps.
Not sure about the time issue.

the Medtner i found and Brahms 2nd and Prok 3rd arent really my kind of pieces
Schumann ive never been able to play anything of his not even stupidly simple stuff like the Kinderscenen... yes im weird
Chopin 2nd i just printed off and played through- i could manage it, but still looking out for alternatives- just because playing Chopin in a competition at a standard anything less than perfect is virtually an automatic fail
cant find the score of Stravinsky so will look in library i think- will also look into Paderewski.
thanks for the suggestions- if anyone has any more to add please do.

the hummel 3rd and 6th are too long, but im liking the 1st movement of the 2nd sonata and the recording i heard was exactly 7 mins and its on the slow side so i might use that one.
im listening to the Scriabin sonatas 1-4 now and liking them but they sound a lot of work- has anyone played any of them and what are they like to learn? (just 1st mvts)

I play the 4th sonata of scriabin, and it is indeed a lot of work. For sure if you want it to be GOOD, for a competition.
I would propose schumann, the 3th sonata of prokofiev is a little more than 7mins i think, may be schumann, but why not a late sonata of beethoven, they are great and if played well, very impressive for the jury.

Kabalevsky? Three to choose from - I don't know the first, but the 2nd and 3rd are good stuff.
