Schumann Op.22 Sonata

I am beginning to play this work. My Henle edition of the first movement says "So rasch wie moeglich", which makes a lot of sense as a tempo indication. But, there is anothe rmoarking, in brackets, saying 144 to the quarter note. I've tried this with a metronome, and I think it's a bit too fast... what do you think? What tmepo would you play the first movement at?

As fast as humanly possible.  Of course, later on you must player "faster" and "faster still" ;D

I know... I speak German...... and yet, as fast as humanely possible sounds too fast..... all the nuances are gone at that tempo....
