(free) Software to slow down audio?
on: September 08, 2008, 01:43:40 AM
I want to listen to a passage a little closer.  I've replayed the sound clip several times, but my ears only go so far by themselves.  I want to hear more detail.

Is there any free software available that will slow down audio?  I only really need a short clip, a few seconds.  If it could keep the pitch the same, great.  If not, fine, I can figure it out still.

Although... I'm thinking Windows have a little recorder device that could do this... I should look into that too.

Any other ideas?  I'm not looking for a huge program.  Audacity is too big and doesn't play nicely with my computer.

I know I've seen freebie programs... Something like "The Great SlowDowner" program.

What you are thinking of is called 'Amazing Slow Downer'.

While it isn't a free program, you can download a trial version and listen to a portion of CD sound clips, which may be enough for your purpose.

Downloads can be found here.

PS - This works great, you can alter the speed from 200% down to 20% of the original tempo without altering the pitch.

Audacity is free and does that for you.

My computer doesn't seem to like Audacity.  I tried it before and it kept freezing up.

I think the Amazing Slow Downer is what I was thinking of, except it's $50.  Ouch.  The demo version might work for what I want though.

Windows media has three speeds: normal, fast, slow. You can slow down with control+shift+s. But for more professional working I would recommend ASD (Amazing slow downer) I bought it and its fully worth it. You can put every little part on loop, you can choose different types of slowdown. Actually, considering which way I'm working (lots of improvs to edit) I would be lost without it.

Is there a way to play something on your computer and have it record?  I can't get the windows accessories recorder to do that.

The ASD program looks like it only works with CDs and sound files.  I'd like to record a short clip of audio off the internet and have something slow it down.  I could pipe it out of the computer and turn it into a sound file, but that's getting to be more work than it's worth.

You mean like looping the In and Out ports?

What kind of "clip" is this.  Can you save it, or is it streaming?  You may need a separate program to capture streaming content.

At one point I could have sworn I had internet radio on and accidentally recorded it.  Just had the radio on through the internet and hit record and ended up recording some of that radio material.  But it's not doing it now.  I could stick a cable from the audio out to the mic in I suppose.  That's work though.  I want it simple. Haha.

Yeah, Rosoft (freeware) will do it.  I use Audacity now, but in the past mostly used Rosoft.

What's Rosoft?  That's new to me?

With the free demo version of ASD, you can only do 30 seconds or a minute and that's really more than I need.  I think.  What I'd like to do it play something on the computer, most likely from the internet, and record a short sound clip of that, less than 30 seconds.  Then have the ASD slow it down.  I could have sworn I accidentally recorded something off the internet radio once.  I guess i could take a stereo cable out of the headphones and into the mic jack.
