advice: not to well known piece - 10mins
on: September 11, 2008, 08:47:06 PM
Hi!
I want to study a piece which is not too well know, and is around 5 and 10mins.
I prefer the romantic to late romantic period.
Everything is welcome!
Thx in advance

perhaps some Medtner? there's too much, you really need to narrow it down a bit! it also depends on your skill level. Other composers you could look at are Alkan, Dohnanyi, Bortkiewicz.. there's too many to list. And then there's the whole microcosm of transcriptions and paraphrases.

If you like Polish music, look into Scharwenka. He really is wonderful; especially the Polish Dances and the waltzes. Also look into Dobrzynski's nocturnes. Alkan can be quite difficult but it is definitely worth it. Some of Cui's longer preludes are also an option (#6, 13, 22). Paderewski has some gorgeous pieces also.

How about the Melody in e minor by Gabrilowitsch? It is recorded by Hough.

How about the March Marocaine by Leopold de Meyer.
Not very well known and probably has not been played in concerto for 150 years.

My recommendation is Kyllikki by Sibelius. Very beautiful and melodic.
You can listen to clips of it here:
