Just a shot in the dark, maybe.  Any hack opera pianists out there I can commiserate with?  SOOOO depressing...

I am a professional operatic transcription hack pianist if that is any good.

My teacher implied I was a hack.  ;D  Nice, huh?

Oh well.  I do my best and keep trying and working at it.

Even if you're a hack, there are people willing to pay you play for them.  Schools, church, background music, etc.  The stuff no one cares if haven't shaped the melody perfectly.  Just hack, hack, hack and churn out music.  On some (most) of those pianos (at least the ones I've played on) you can do much with shape anyway (or I'm too much of a hack to have that ability).

Playing notes in rhythm without much expression.  I would consider that a hack pianist.

But you can play through a lot of music doing that and new stuff is enjoyable.

Oh I misread. I'm not reading close enough.  I'm just a hack pianist, not a hack opera pianist.  I do have some opera "easy classics" that work for some situations though, so maybe.

Not good enough, you need to specialize also. ;D

Now that's something I could get interested in.  I just ordered the Sorobji Salome schluss-szene.  Can't wait to get my hands on that.  I've always wanted to do something with "Butterfly" but never had the time or ability, I guess.
Glad I'm not the only hack pianist around.  It's true, it pays the rent.  And it COULD be a good zen excercise.

Only transcription I've ever seen from that (though Thal may know better) is the humming chorus, transcribed for LH by Paul Wittgenstein.

As for hack pianist - I suppose that, with my repetiteur hat on, I'm a professional hack.

You don't have any particulars regarding the editor (the humming chorus from butterfly)?

Sorry, can't remember! It's part of a whole volume of LH transcriptions and pieces.

Just looked it up in the catalogue of the library from which I once borrowed it - Universal, in 1957.

I've heard of Universal.  Just another publisher.  I think they did Schoenberg works, at least a few.  That was the only place I could get a Schoenberg piece once.
