If you were leaving your business ...
on: September 23, 2008, 05:25:46 PM
Who would you pass everything on to ?
I have been thinking about this a bit. I guess it could mean that you are just either deciding to be doing something else, or you are moving and can't take everything with you, or you are "willing" it to somebody. That sort of thing.
So, I am talking about your instrument(s), your scores, your books, your recordings, perhaps your students, your research, just everything !
For me, I really am not sure. Ultimately, I think I would like to leave it all with somebody I love and whom loves me, but would somehow get some "use" out of all of it. So, my family comes to mind, but they would not necessarily "carry on" with any particular thing, nor would they necessarily appreciate the scores and research, and instruments and such. I mean, they may value them because they were/are mine, but not because of what they are, necessarily.
And, students come to mind, but it seems it would need to be somebody very particular, especially if it were truly a lifetime's worth of work.

Well I guess some sort of apprenticeship would be best. In my business, that would be the most competent coworker since it's all pretty much learning on the job anyways.
How would a music teacher apprenticeship work? Maybe to just keep an eye out for somebody who's already teaching, because it would be hard to tell which student might wind up teaching at some point.
My family would get no use from my music things, I would save them for somebody who could use them.

Why give all that away? Just keep it. Or sell it if you need the money.
