Clementi for the sonatas, Mozart for concerti and everything else.

Clementi was probably the better pianist.

when dignity, love, and joy meet...

Clementi was probably the better pianist.

Thal

Almost certainly, a glance at their piano writing shows a greater understanding and use of the pianoforte's capabilities in Clementi's music. Mozart's writing becomes fuller and more expansive after his encounter with Clementi, as he realized he had a dangerous rival.

Clementi has some beautiful themes and ideas but his development of them often leaves a great deal to be desired; the b minor Sonata from Op.40 is a good example, the material is extraordinary but the "development" section just rattles on, switching clumsily from key to key. There is no real development, merely poverty of invention thinly veiled by an abundance of notes. On the other hand the f# minor Sonata op.25 No.5 is a masterpiece, one of the best keyboard sonatas of the classical period. If more of Clementi's music was of this quality he would have a better place and ranking in music history. He probably spent too much time at his piano and publishing company and not enough time at the writing desk. He did not have the natural gifts of Mozart. But then, who ever has?

I agree with you there, i prefer it to any of Mozarts sonatas.

Dussek & Woelfl too should be investigated for those interested in the classical sonata.

I would like to hear and read through more of these composers; they don't turn up much at the music shops, that's for sure. I like what I've heard of Dussek, he's definitely more in the early Romantic period than the Classical. His style is unique. Woelfl is more classical but interests me more; all I've heard of his piano music is a Sonata I heard on the radio a few years ago, played by John Nakamattsu, who said in an interview on the program that he was intending to include Woelfl in his recitals. Don't know if he has, but I would defintely like to hear more Woelfl and read through some; his music was good stuff for sure.

Clementi's are so more artistic than Mozart. Why not as famous?
