Bach-Busoni question
on: October 10, 2008, 01:31:27 PM
did he really transcribe Bach's "Jesu, joy of man's desiring"?  It says on the media section of wikipedia that it was transcribed by busoni, is it true? there are copies of his bach transcriptions everywhere on the internet and yet I do not see any "Jesu, bleibet.." in it. Just asking...

BTW, I'm considering the D major prelude and fugue soon. Any tips?

You would be correct.  Several others did, though the Myra Hess transcription is most frequently used... and easiest to obtain.

Tips?  Yeah, good luck!  :P

Seriously, if you take the fugue up to tempo, you'd best have good octaves.  Any sloppiness will be highly exposed.  I've heard organists begin the fugue too fast, only to come to grief when the going gets difficult.  (Bach must have had an amazing pedal technique, far in advance of his day.)

How about the prelude? Is it difficult?

Not as hard as the fugue -though all Bach-Busoni is difficult- but I've always found the prelude rather bombastic (on the piano) in places.
