software, hardware for drawing

I was thinking about this, just for fun.  To make something digital, some kind of drawing.

What software is good?  I've heard of Photoshop, but I don't know if that's for drawing or touching up photos.  Maybe yes for both?

And what hardware?  I've seen those drawing pads that connect to the computer so you can draw with a pencil stylus. 

And not just drawing.  Anything.  Like what you might do with pencil and paper or with the simple paint programs, but more elaborate.

Any ideas?

I work with a couple of designers who use Quark 8.

I think it does just about anything related to drawing and design and is used in the printing industry.

It is rather expensive, but i understand that there is cheaper version for windows.

Google offer a free package called piccassa and some drawing can be done with that. I only use photoshop for cleaning up my scans.

Photoshop is just for editing photos. Yeah you can get drawing pads that connect via USB but they can be rather expensive, you would have to very enthusiastic to want to get one. As for plain drawing software, I'm not quite sure...will have to look.

I usually use photoshop CS3 and Corel Draw for making illustration in school magazine. But I often use Mangga Studio 3.0 too to make G-pen and Kabura-pen outline effect. It depends to what kind of drawing that u want to make...

For hardware, I use Wacom Tablet  . This one's really good for making manga style illustration and also helping a lot in graphic designing
