recommend a Halloween, scary movie

New, old.  Classic, lesser known.  Anything.

I've wanted to see some.  If I ever get around to it... ::)

My favourite scary film ever has to be Dead of Night - a really old one! It's made up of short pieces by different directors, all loosely linked when the people involved meet at a country house. The famous one is the last in the set, with Michael Redgrave putting in a superb performance as a ventriloquist being driven out of his mind by his dummy.

It was made by Ealing Studios in 1945 - it's terrifying but brilliant.
Go you big red fire engine!

Michael Haneke's "Funny Games," either in its original cut or his own recent remake in English with Naomi Watts.  As The New York Times critic Stephen Holden said, it's "blood-curdling."

After that, watch Haneke's "The Piano Teacher" with Isabelle Huppert.  You'll take up the tuba in no time. Horrifying film, in every way imaginable!

I liked the music from both.

I saw Quarantine a little while ago, it was a fun movie.  Not super amazing, but a good blend of violence, gore, and suspense.  I damn near did a backflip in my seat at one scene ;D

A friend told me that Rob Zombie's 'Hells Rejects' was a good one.  It's a sequel to House of 1000 Corpses, which I wasn't too crazy about - it got a bit too wacky for me...  But according to my friend Hells Rejects is better.

I really enjoyed the Grudge.  That directors movies are all starting to seem pretty similar, but somehow the Grudge got under my skin more than usual.  I like when it can get into my head, and the darkness is full of spooky imaginings for the rest of the night.

Tangent:  The short stories of HP Lovecraft are amazing, so far they're my favorite horror stories.  So imaginative!

(Bob thinks people here might not like scary movies.)

In my case, Bob is right.  Action, horror, adventure, Halloween...  not my cup of tea.
Though I remember (I must have been 15 or 16 at that time) watching for the first time the film "Coma", directed by Michael Crichton with a 'young' Michael Douglas in a 'second role'...
Another movie, that I would like to see again, is 'Cape Fear', with Robert de Niro.  Wonderfully directed, the Niro is so poignant, the whole movie is wonderfully designed (those unforgettable bloody credits by 'Saul Bass' - and the fantastic music-score - just looked it up - by Bernard Herrmann)...  a wonderful experience.

Bob, you know the Alien series with Sigourney Weaver, right?  Do only the first three.  The third one, Alien3, is directed by David Fincher and is totally Wagnerian, with Ripley playing the part of Brunnhilde in a massive immolation scene worthy of Gotterdammerung.

Great score by Elliot Goldenthal.

And that great Korean monster flic, The Host.  Very creepy.

Not very fond of ghost/ killing/ suspense stories. I'm more concerned with plot than anything.

We watched The Ring 1, 2 and 0 (Japanese) in high school dormitory and I quite liked it. Ring 0 is my favorite, as it becomes more of a drama. I was of course, curious of the (Hollywood?) English version, but it was a joke. So appalling. Imagine a tv pushing a person into a well. I also tried watching the Grudge in Japanese but it wasn't so interesting. Too much killing as opposed to story for me.

I'd say Identity is also a good movie, it's not scary like a ghost story, more like suspense really. And The 6th sense will always be a memorable. "I see dead people."

If you're into apocalyptic stories, maybe try the Omen series. There are 4 old movies, plus the new remake. On the topic of demons, the Exorcist is a classic, it's so scary for me that I've never been able to watch it for more than a few mintues (late night tv in bed with siblings when I was younger). After that I hid in the sheets, but even the sound terrified me until I fell asleep.

The Shining.

The opening credits of Ginger Snaps is cool.

Candyman sort of freaked me out when I was a kid.

Of course Psycho - for the story and the music.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

"Sweeney Todd."  Terrifying AND great music.

Also, "Bob Goes a-Haunting."  Love that movie!

And don't forget "Psycho Beach Bob,"  and "Whatever Happened to Baby Bob?"

Hellraiser - Not necessarily scary but very creepy and very grim. Quite gruesome in places as well.

Alien - Utterly terrifying. A superb film, genuinely disturbing, fantastically well designed. Awesome score by Jerry Goldsmith, beautiful yet frightening.

The Thing - Be afraid. Be VERY afraid. Definitely one to watch with the lights out. Stomach churning...
