on: October 26, 2008, 12:31:55 AM
For those of you who don't know Alexander Korsantia is an absolutely dumbfounding pianist from Georgia. His playing is explosive and is rich in in just about every musical aspect you could imagine. AND HIS CD IS COMMING OUT IN 2 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, at $29.95 CAD, it's a little expensive for an unknown pianist.

Well,it is a 2-CD set, so it's not that expensive, not to mention he is one of the best pianists I've seen in a long time! He has jaw-dropping technique and power.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Consider this--the most brilliant pianists (and people, in general) are mostly unknown. On the other hand, he is not that unknown (he is on faculty in New England Conservatory). In any case, with his quality of playing I'd consider the price as a biggest bargain. These are live recordings. The Prokofiev No.8 IMO, is the best version ever made. The Stravinsky-Agosti is mind blowing, all the rest on the disks is whether 1) spectacular, or just 2) plain beautiful.
I admit, I have some interest in promotion of this disk, on the other hand, not very often I am so enthusiastic about pianists, especially modern. There is something absolutely unique in his playing, as opposed to most of the other pianists, when I cannot tell one from the other.

Best, M

OK, I can appreciate that. Never having heard anything about him, you can understand my reticence.

You've piqued my interest. If he is as good as you say, then the money would be worth it. As you know, the competiton is fierce and I can't imagine what it is like in the world of a concert pianist.

Is there a site where one could hear snippets of his performances?

Cheers

With the dollar strengthening against the British pound, this CD was $15.68 from MDT in England! I should have it in a few days.

What British pound is that, then? Oh, sorry - I've just noticed that it has not quite died yet (although by the time I've finished typing this it may well have acquired a negative value)...

No kidding...these are scary times. However, a fine CD such as this should ease the pain.

It arrived today. Oh lordy, his further arrangement of Agosti's transcription of Stravisnky's Firebird is beyond belief! I haven't had time to listen to the rest of it yet, but no doubt it is all amazing.

What if I do purchase it and don't find the performances as compelling as the promotion?  It's happened before: high praise given to something that wasn't worth it to begin with.  High expectations only to be struck with disappointment.

The greater the explicit praise, the less genuine the actual product.  I'll easily pass on this and won't give it a second thought.  But I'll give it a second thought just for fun.

Notice that no one has mentioned anything specific about the quality of the musicianship.  The most tangible expression expressed is of the pianist's pianism.  Pianism doesn't make music, it just makes a piano function.

When discussing the worth of a recording, it is essential to discuss the purpose.  Id est: The music.  Does the performer interpret the music in a manner that is the most effective at representing the ideas?  Does it feel complete or are certain qualities left unfulfilled?  Do the performances age well with repeated listening?  Etc.

Instead: Let's review some quotes:

With remarks such as these, how can one not think it didn't come from the press?

haha my father is so proud of his review of this CD on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Korsantia-Live-in-Concert/dp/B001GMFJ70/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1229903115&sr=1-1

I second everything your dad says! For once, "musicality" (however one defines that elusive/abstract word) and amazing technique are in equal abundance. He doesn't just jackhammer his way through everything--the Bach is played as tenderly as one could wish, and at the other end of the scale, the ferocity he unleashes in the Stravinsky defies belief. And no, I'm not a member of the press, just an ardent admirer.

If it turns out it doesn't live up to the hype, will you refund my money?  It's $27 USD at Amazon.

There was only one left in stock when I checked Amazon earlier which means someone who read this thread bought the last one.  Who was it?  I sure hope the hype was worth the price.  I'm glad it wasn't my money.

I only paid about $15 from MDT in England...and maybe $2 shipping to the US.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
