Just a kestion
on: November 06, 2008, 02:51:25 PM
Why do people ask how difficult something is? I'm just curious as to their working progress.
Surely they know that all difficulty is subjective as has been said 10,000 times and anything we say is going to be based on our eprsonal opinion,.
If someone is going to tackle the major repertoire, surely they know enough about their own playing to know whether something is going to be mangeable for them and what looks like it's going to be a problem.
The obvious first step would be looking through the music and then playing through - hands seperately if you can't sight read that well!
Enlighten me someone.....

Simple. They know they might be wrong about their own ability, and want to find a second opinion, preferably from a teacher or advanced student. Some may think they're going too fast, others too slow.

Personally, I think most people just hack pieces without thinking and commend anyone who asks questions first before starting... PS. Have you seen some of the videos on here? I have to say, some people have a lot of guts...

So why not ask their teacher? Or if they're an amateur, post a recording so we can have an idea of their skills.  Surely them saying I can play 'whatever' and then not knowing exactly what their abilities are doesn't help us in trying to answer the question.

That I don't know. Maybe there is bad teacher or none.

Or if they're an amateur, post a recording so we can have an idea of their skills.

I know some on here post videos.
Saying I can play this or that is truly vague, but sometimes that's all you can say. Especially if you're new (like me).

I guess some want to brag, some actually are at that level and are curious at what level they are, and probably some other vague reasons.

What they usually dont understand that there is no way for us of telling them if a piece is too hard for them, since we dont know HOW they played the pieces they told they could already play, unless they post it in audition.
