We were lucky too, to have the sea between us and mainland Europe.
But that was then; nowadays, the very existence of our delightfully expensive multi-zillion-pound loss-making Chunnel leaves us in a position that Shakespeare would have to re-describe as "this scepter'd promontory" (which is abit of a shame as it would scan far less well and is infinitely less elegant than his original). The Europe that we have now extends much farther in several directions than was the case during either of the two world wars of the past century and its future may well be one which, whatever colour in which it is decreed that it may appear on maps (like the old pink for the British Empire), will likely begin at Grønland in the west and extend to include Afghanistan in the east; well, that could be interesting for a whole raft of reasons, not least of which may be the sheer number of poppies growable (legally or otherwise) in and exportable from Afghanistan that could be used in future Remembrance Day commemorations...

Well next time, quote her post...not mine. If your problem is with her and what she said...then you quote her, to avoid confusion.

Apologies for snapping at you,

It is probably not taught in France as it is not exactly their "greatest hour"

The Irish did better!

True. They're battle plan was just to get them all drunk of Guiness. (I can slag the Irish off, half my family are Irish!)

The Irish played a great role in the wars.

Many were awarded the VC.

They did a better job of withstanding the Blitzkrieg than the French did.

Oh good god almighty, we're probably very distantly related...connected by two drunken Irish people having a moment of passion behind the Guiness brewery in Dublin.

This is a picture of my Uncle.

I wish to remember all who died in the wars, not just the allies.

Discuss, if you wish.

Hi shortyshort,

I think its nice of you to put that picture of you uncle on here ( I have similar looking photos ), and I completely agree with you, we should remember ALL who died in the wars, on both sides.

I had members of my faimly in the war both on the English and the German sides ( I'm roughly 50% German, but can't speak a word of it  :(), so I can relate to it on both sides.

My nan refused to work in the ammunition factorys in Germany and was sent to prison. She also was shot at by the English in a field as she picked potatoes ( she was ok luckly ), and fled Dresden as a spy told her the it would be attacked, the next day it was bombed.

She then ended up marrying an English mechanic that was working in Germany and moved to England... ;D

Thanks.

My Uncle ended up as a POW in Wales, working on the farms.
He met my Aunt there. And when he was released, they got married.
The farmer that he was working for offered him the farm if he stayed and worked it.
He wanted to go home, so left ASAP and they started thier new life in Germany.

Although now Dead, he has 4 children, 9 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.
