Possible section for lessons?
on: November 17, 2008, 11:43:46 AM
I was thinking about this for a while: A subforum for the more experienced/skilled members of this forum to teach those who are less knowledgeable. Students or teachers post (sort of advertising) for a teacher/students and members pm the teacher or student to try to initiate lessons. Lessons could be conducted via PM or in the forum in threads so others could see and maybe learn from the lessons passively. The lessons could be on theory, technical work for a particular instrument or just for help with one thing they don't understand. I've seen this kind of system used on a couple of other forums and it seems to work fairly well.
Thoughts?

What do you think the Student's Corner is? For less experienced people to ask for advice and help (advertising is not allowed).

If a member wishies to take up online tutorials from another, experienced member then they can do so via PM instead of disturbing the forums. :)

Not advertising like certain musical systems (hint hint)...OK I can't really explain it that well. Have a look at this: https://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/lessons.html
THAT is more or less what I am describing.

P.S. What do you mean "advertising certain musical systems (hint hint)"?  :)

That is pretty neat. You could take it a step further, with something like podcasts of e-masterclasses held over the forum.

How would you feel giving/receiving interpretative advice to someone you've never met?  :o

Pretty cool ideas there!!  ;) That's like audition room, but maybe we could have a separate subforum especially for lessons.

Yeah maybe could even do that, would have to have some sort of link though to do it.
I wouldn't mind, I've been teaching a girl in Holland a bit over the last 8 months so I have some idea of how to do it.

What I had in mind when I suggested that was something like a recognized member of the forym starting a "Masterclass" topic for a specific set of pieces. Then other members could post their recordings/vidios and receive advise. It would be kind of the opposite of the audition room: Instead of someone posting a recording, and everyone commenting based on that, the music to be played is decided beforehand and the recording follows.
I think this might be better for some people - there are quite a few comments in the audition room asking for major reworkings of an interpretation, and I think they are somewhat superfluous if the person who made the recording is posting a piece that's "finished" interpretationwise. Having things the other way around makes it clear that the person posting the recording _wants_ all they can get.

We need a poll...

Go to Poland.  :P

Isn't your poll very similar to another member's poll on the Anything But Piano board? :)

I vote: "Give it up!"

In a locked thread, there was a poll similar. A word-game thread...

Giving advice over internet is the worst thing there is. Something like those language-courses from a CD: Now repeat after me "Hablo español" -"agrhö arjg" -"Ah, very good. You're making a great progress".

The thing is, the "student" doesn't get any feedback, and he/she doesn't even know if he's doing it right.

So plz, give it up.

We could have theory lessons though.
Like analysing a piece or something.

You would need to take people from other time zones into consideration though.

No
I meant a place where we would pick a piece and analyse it a bit more thoroughly.

Maybe some wise and knowledgeable volunteer could start a piece analysis and people would then ask questions and such.
Just a thought.
We probably wouldn't even need a new section, we can use the MTheory forum.

Like a theory masterclass.
