TV advert - what music is it?
on: November 23, 2008, 09:21:53 PM
Can anyone tell me what the music in the 'Train to Gain' TV advert is? To my shame I don't know what it is. I saw Vladimir Ashkenazy playing the same piece in a documentary about him and I was wondering what it was then. Thanks.

Yeah I saw that tv add and documentary, and I was gonna ask the same question! Beat me to it... :P I really couldn't work out who composed it; if  I had a wild guess I would of thought it was Mozart? :-[ :-X, but its to nuts for him.

its a cool 8) piece. Beethoven blows me away again.

I thought you were one of these classical music boffs, how could hear a piece and recite the composer's name, opus number, key ect, as well as Dot from Eastenders could quote the Bible! lol

I do not consider Schumann romantic.

He is in a class of his own.

Whats wrong with Schumann??? I have read other peoples posts and he seems to be quite unpopular on here. Why?

Just because he had a problem with his hand caused by mercury poisoning and his wife was a better pianist them him and he was a bit jealous of her and he went mad (mercury poisoning again)...

leave Robert alone :D.

Has this been proved?

because I have read another theory that says that this is unlikely and that he used a machine designed to stregnthen the 4th finger and it was this machine that caused his disability

I don't actually know a great deal about Schumann to be honest! I found out that infomation from one of those general books on composers, I would like to get a good book on him one day though.

It could of been possible. Using mercury as a medicine back in the day was quite common ::).  In the book it said he took it as a treatment for syphilis. So it could explan his madness, as mercury makes you go mad - Just like that Chinese emperor who took it to make him live forever or something ::) :o

Hence the expression "mad as a Hatter" because hatters used alot of Mercury so they all went bonkers
