Reporting e-mail scams
on: January 16, 2009, 12:38:59 AM
I get some scam type e-mails ever once in a while, but with in the past three days have recieved 3 of them.  Same story different sender names.  Is there anywhere I can report this to authorities?   I'm in Canada.

I know this isn't spam because it is addressed to ME.  I have my studio listed in several local business directories, and they are using the e-mail address I have designated for such advertising.

is the Australian authority that deals with online frauds. If you personally get swindled out of money you must go to your local police station and report it. There have been stings over the years that arose out of this action. You can't really do much unless they actually take money from you, but I wouldn't get myself in that situation in the first place.

The scam you are describing has been around for many years, with its variation. Usually they send you a useless, worthless check, then cancel the lessons asking you to refund some money. Of course you may keep their initial payment, which is worth zero, and pay them back some money they so politely ask for :)

I agree that this is a scam.  I receive them also.  I report any unusual format to the MTNA so that they can make their members aware of any new scams.  Often, they will ask to refund the difference in their ckeck and your tuition to them.  Thisis how they make money.  I usually delete them.

I would designate it as SPAM so that it goes directly into your spam folder. What a pain.

Just delete it.  Then it won't be a worry.

This has happened to me almost daily since I first started advertising piano lessons (and my email address) on the internet. My cpanel boxtrapper weeds out most of them, googlemail spam picks out some more. For the rest, there is the 'delete' key...

Probably because the scam asks for teaching.
