Power Chords
on: January 26, 2009, 12:09:08 PM
Hey, I'm looking for a few intermediate pieces (like around chopin military polonaise) that have thick textures and lots of powerfull contrasting (in dynamics) chords for performance repertoire. Love some help.
      Thanks - Kayordee. :)

Actually, on the guitar, power chords consist of 5ths--"Smoke on the Water" consists of 4ths (for the main riff--he plays octaves during the verse, then he arpeggiates 5ths/octaves during the chorus.)

Seconded!

After that, how about Rachmaninov's C-Sharp Minor Prelude, Op. 3, No. 2?

And Ginastera's "Danza del Guach Matrero" from his Three Argentine Dances?

Indeed, this is a throughout study of the powerchord as we know it where all itīs inversions, dynamics and social functions are covered. Thanks for the mention.

(Actually I though the Smoke on the water riff was actually fifths and represented stereotypical powerchords)

You're very welcome.  BTW, I enjoyed your scholarly article in "Musika Varoomika" regarding the social functions of powerchords . . . especially that section on "powerchords as surrogate mothers."  Most enlightening.
