What should I play after czerny op. 599?

I'm finishing opus 599 and I haven't decided what to play next. My teacher said that School of Velocity opus 299 has dry and boring but useful etudes. And I don't wanna jump to Chopin's etude just yet. I think it's too soon. So what do you recommend? And how about The art of finger dexterity op. 740? is it any good? And I know that Clementi composed a very good etude collection called: "Gradus ad Parnassum". How do you compare it with Czerny's?

Some music maybe... You could do Debussy's Doctor gradus ad parnassus. It´s about finger dexterity and probably alot more fun then clementis excersices.

Moszkowski Etudes Op. 72

Maybe some Scarlatti Sonatas

I agree with the Debussy suggestion above.

Hi,

may I ask what you've done in parallel with op.599? I'm asking because I'm doing it to, and I don't have a teacher, so, I'd like to know if I should be doing something else. I'm learning easy pieces (well, they're not that easy, but it's difficult to find music that's "my level") and doing some Hanon in parallel. Thank you for your input. Also, if you don't mind, how long did it take you?

I checked Moszkowski Etudes and some of them really seem the thing I should be playing after opus 599. But etudes like no 6 & 11 look as difficult as Chopin's etudes!

So should I take it from your replies that Czerny's School of Velocity and Art of Finger Dexterity is no good? Actually I've played many pieces: Mozart Facile Sonata, Turkish March, Beethoven Sonata No. 1, .... . And now I've started Fantasia Impromptu (it's so damn hard!

). And I don't find Czerny opus 599 as dry and boring as some say (truthfully a couple of them are horrible! but not all).

There are a lot of pieces that you can play. However it depends on what etude of Czerny you're playing. The first 30-40 ones are really easy (especially if you've played for example Beyer's book before Czerny).

Anyway, as some suggestions for pieces you can play: Mozart Sonata No. 16 (the third movement is a little tricky, but all in all not that much difficult) & Turkish March. Beethoven Sonata No. 1 (This one is easier than the more well known ones like Moonlight and Pathetique although it still takes time to play it well - especially the last movement Prestissimo. I myself played the first & second movement. My teacher told me to play the 3rd & 4th movement a couple of months later.) Schubert Moments Musical No. 3 & 5.

And how about some New Age pieces? I enjoy playing some of Yanni's pieces, for example. They're really beautiful and emotional, and much easier than Beethoven Sonatas or Chopin pieces!

About how long it took me to finish opus 599, considering I played one etude every week on average, I think about 1 year & 6,7 months.

You don't have to learn all of them consecutively. They are probably a good stepping stone to start the Chopin Etudes. Learn according to your technical ability, after you learn one, make the next one a step up in difficulty.

The only thing that can really prepare you for the Chopin Etudes is to play them. You could probably do Chopin 25/2 at this point. Have you had a look at the Nouvelle Etudes?
