Repertorie Recommendations?
on: April 09, 2009, 05:15:34 AM
Hi, so basically I'm in need of a Romantic piece to learn for my local high school piano competition coming up in about 9 months. It doesn't need to be too terribly difficult -- basically something I can learn the notes in maybe 2 months or so, put it away for a while, and then re-learn it before the competition. I'm also going to be playing the Appassionata 1st movement. Right now I'm working on Chopin 10/4 for technique, but I realize that by the time the competition rolls around, even though I'll probably have it technically sound, the musicality won't be there.
Anyone have suggestions? I was looking at Mendelssohn's F sharp fantasie, but then I realized the individual movements were too short and the whole thing too long. Because my teacher's trying to build my technique, I'm not very familiar with anything outside of Chopin, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff.

There are some Rachmaninov's preludes and even etudes that should not be too technically challenging for you if you're at appassionata and op10n4.

I don't really know what the issue with length and duration of movements is, so I just have to disregard it. Sorry; could you possibly explain more?
Alkan Etude dans tous les Tons Majores No. 10 "Chant de Amor, Chant de Mort"
Alkan Selection of "Esquisses"
Bach-Busoni Sheep may Safely Graze
Brahms Intermezzo Op. 118 No. 6
Busoni Sonatina No. 6 "Carmen" (probably too hard to memorize fast, though)
Chabrier Bouree Fantasque
Chopin Fantasy Op. 49
Chopin Nocturne No. 48 Op. 1
Chopin Scherzo No. 4 Op. 54 (same; more difficult that it looks)
Debussy Ballade
Gershwin 3 Preludes
Granados El Amor y la Muerte
Grieg Sonata in A Minor
Liszt Ballade No. 2
Liszt Benediction to God in Solitude from Harmonies Poetiques et Religiouse
Liszt Isolde's Liebestod

Rachmaninov Suites Op. 3 or 10

Tchaikovsky-Pletnev Selection from Nutcracker Suite

EDIT- Oh wait, this is just to impress your highschool friends? Then let me suggest Poisson d'Or from Debussy's Images II. It's easy to learn piss-poorly. You won't be able to learn it to your teacher's standards, but it will impress the sh*t out of your high school class =P I can send you the sheets and a few really good recordings.
