Help with Czerny
on: April 10, 2009, 07:07:34 AM
 :)
I currently studing Czerny op. 299 no. 28 and I have the following problem. I don not now how to practice in order to able play at tempo because when I play so fast the same pattern throughout this etude my right hand becomes so tense and I have to stop. The experience so far has been with fast works that there are moments in the piece where you can relax. I can not see how I can do it with etude and others where you have a motif repitited itself all the time at super fast tempo.

I sure do know about Czerny and his exercises, but I feel that every thing does not have to play at an ultra fast tempo, not until your hands can handle it better without being tense.  I would recommend that you play at a slower pace, until your hands becomes more relaxed.  The hands should never get tense in the first place while you play anything on the piano.  What you can do, is stop playing, once you feel your hands tense up, just drop your arms to your side and shake your hands for a few seconds, and then lift your arms to the square and place your fingers upon the keys.  Also, check how your wrists on how theyfeel while you play a piece.  Are they too high or too low and being tense?  Hope that will help you,

best wishes,

go

Thanks for the advice. When I play at a slower tempo my hand is ok. There is however a tempo indication in the book and that means that I have to play near that tempo and I am not sure that repetitive practice will help to increase the thempo so that fast tempo will  come naturally

Believe me , that increase of tempo will come.  It has for me.  Increasing tempo doesn't have to be a requirement unless you are a student that has to play at that tempo at a time limit.  Pace yourself and you will find your hands will respond better and not tense up because you "want to", not because you "have to".  Try that approach.

I've just done the Number 10 from Op.299, it's not the hardest thing in the world, arpeggios in the left hand, alberti bass. My teacher gave me an exercise that helped increase my speed a lot. The velocity comes over time though.
Within each phrase, play the first note at tempo, then the others really slowly, then repeat, but make the first and second not fast and the others slow, and so forth. Don't go as fast as you can at first, but gradually speed up over time so that your muscles and tendons don't tire. I played to fast for multiple hours at first, and I gave myself slight tendinitis, and believe me, you don't want that.
Good luck. :)

It's seems Czerny is very popular, and has pieces for all levels.  What pieces would people recommend or would you work through,i've been playing for 5 years now.

Thanks for any help

Give us some indication of pieces that you play so that we can suggest on of the his  works. For five years of study op.299 should be the one although the etudes are not all of the same level.
