African piano music?
on: April 11, 2009, 10:02:02 PM
I got a flier in the mail today.  African piano music?

Is there anything decent for African piano music?  I wasn't aware of its existence before.

Western... Then some Spanish stuff and Asian music.  Mussorgky's stuff, being rustic Russian.

Just curious if anyone knows about African piano music.  The flier says it's based on spirtiual, folksongs, pop and jazz...?   Pop and jazz makes me wonder.

(Bob pictures a grand piano sitting on the African grasslands with lions walking by.) That's just not something you see everyday.   ::)

Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim fits that description.

Are there any sound clips on the internet I can hear?

I'm guessing African piano music must not be considered on par with Western if I've gone this long without hearing anything about it.  It must not be on the same level, or must not be accepted.

Kevin Volans is a South African composer who still lies within the Western tradition, but has incorporated many influences from traditional African music. He has some piano music which would fit the bill. Just check out his website to look for some. I haven't heard much of it, but what I have heard is very good.

I the flier for African piano music.  I saw it and thought, "What African piano music?"

The piano's from the West.  Most of the music's from the West.

(Disregarding African music spreading into Jazz, just that tiny detail.)

I've heard of Asian classical music for piano.  The piano was imported and they wrote music for it.

I've heard of Spanish styles.  I'm wondering now about classical piano music from South American or Central.  Granados, (whatever the name is)...  I'm blanking now.

But I just haven't heard about any African classical piano music before.

With emphasis on jazz/pop,

Wouldn't say there are any particular African traits in it, sort of mainstream, not too keen on it myself.
