Schools of Piano

Just out of curiousity, what are the different "schools" of piano playing and more importantly what are the characteristics that distinguish each one?

No idea, hah!  It's not a question I find very useful.  We have access to so many different types of music, it's hard to isolate into one method of practicing.  One method of thinking...

Well here's something.  There's a school of thought that says to learn piano strictly through pieces and that exercises are a waste of time (when you could do the same thing with actual music)...  As opposed to accepting exercises and drills in varying degrees and uses.

I want to join the school of practicing and playing a lot.
