Benjamin Zander TED Talk
on: April 20, 2009, 01:04:37 AM
I just watched this video and I thought I'd share it since it's pretty fun and inspired me. I'm going to try the "one buttock" technique tomorrow.

Entertaining guy.

Good talk on phrasing, Schenkarian analysis.

Kind of a slick speech though.

Motivational speaking though.  What are we supposed to do next?

Thanks for sharing this. Brings a big smile to my face. Not sure what to do next, though. I'm wearing a stupid smile now, and being quite lazy.  :D

Not sure what you mean by what to do next, but in my case it makes me want to share what music means to me and opening people's minds about Classical music, rather than going into a sort of "they're too stupid to understand Beethoven" attitude and minding my own business as if it is simply a matter of 'taste'.

Is he going to explain other pieces of classical music?  No.  Are people going to sit down and discover the same things about other pieces of music?  Maybe, but I doubt it.  And not every piece of music is as accessible as that piece.

So he'll inspire some people and then it will wear off.

Precisely. It is not lasting, not enough to go with.

Well, that's up to the people who listen to him, I'm sure at least one person, if not many, changed their views on classical music. I'm not saying they'll turn into huge fans, but it's something. My parents started listening to classical music just because I started playing piano, now sometimes I catch them watching music documentaries or symphonies, etc. on TV.

Not lasting? Did you happen to talk to people who met him or were in one of his talks? Or do you mean it's not lasting enough for yourself?

Not enough for myself, I mean.

Fair enough, I think that depends on each person, I tend to be highly influenced and inspired by certain people.

I've seen a few speakers like that.  They can make their living doing that and selling books, etc.  It sounds inspiring but after it's over, I'm wondering, now what do I do?  The same things I did before.

I guess it kind of annoys me.  It needs some direction or something else beyond just telling stories.

He's also a conductor, and I don't think he's actually doing talks like that just to make a living. I don't know if you've seen any other TED talks but they are what they're meant to be: people sharing their thoughts on certain subjects to an audience, what and how much you get from it is up to you; as for direction or something more, that's a teacher's job, which I'm sure Mr. Zander could do if you happen to meet him =P

Typical pianoforum knee jerk reaction!  He already has "explained" other pieces of music.  You may be most interested to hear his hour-long cultural analysis of Mahler's Fifth Symphony, which is published along with his recording of that piece with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

In one presentation.  What is the listener supposed to do after this one presentation?

I don't think anyone it's supposed to do anything; I can, though, tell you what I did: I shared it and I went to play the Chopin prelude he played with a fresh approach.

I wasn't aware of that, thanks for the info! I'm just getting into Mahler and it happens to be thanks to that particular Symphony.
