Memories in a ancient garden
on: June 17, 2004, 03:47:20 AM
Is there someone that played "Memories in a ancient garden" by Alexina Louie ? If yes, tell me how did you feel this piece. I think that the tempi that are in the sheet music are really too FAST ! Not because it's hard, it's because I think that sound not good !
You can also tell me if you played that with some rubato or not too much. I just begin to learn it so thank you for your comments !

I haven't learned this piece yet, but it's on my to do list.
My teacher has worked with Alexina Louie before. Advice she passed on to me when I was learning "I leap through the sky with stars" is that tempo markings are just guidelines. You don't have to be slaved by them. What is more important is the overall integrity of the piece. Let the overall sound be your guide, if it sounds good, keep it.
In my study of "I leap through the sky with stars" I too found the tempo markings a bit fast. There are wonderful shapes and coulours in the phrases that just get lost if I play it too fast.
The Canadian Music Centre has a recording of Parker (the dedicatee) playing the piece.
A question for you. Where do you play those glissandos inside the piano? Infront of the dampers, nearer you; or accross the iron bar, further away from you?

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
