Is string noise ok?
on: May 14, 2009, 04:49:27 AM
Finally we got our brand new kawai rx2 delivered. However I am a bit concern with some string sound when I press pedal.

Everytime i press the pedal I can hear something like rubbing my string eventhough not that loud. Eventhough it does not happen when I release the pedal.

Is this normal?

It's quite common for a piano to make a little muffled noise when the pedal is pressed, it's normally just the movement of the pedal mechanism and shouldn't cause any problems or anything.

If you are concerned though get someone to check it out for you :)

That's the brand new dampers coming away from the strings and brushing them gently as they move. As the felt gets more compacted, over a year or two, the noise will disappear. It happens on all new pianos of every make.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

Would the same thing happen if the dampers had been replaced on an older piano?
