Romantic composition or transcription, 8-12 min?
on: June 06, 2009, 06:03:00 PM
I'm looking for such a piece to include in a program. It should have at least several passages that are relatively virtuosic, but need not be a warhorse from start to end.

I know there are thousands of choices and I'm also searching on my own of course. But each of us knows different corners of the repertoire, so I'd just be happy to hear some of your favorites which I may not have considered so far. Everything from early to late romantic, and from all countries, would be fine, e.g. from Weber, Mendelssohn up to Scriabin, Medtner, Lyapunov, etc. Please also post even what you consider obvious choices - they may not be obvious to me!  :)

Some candidates are:
Chopin - Scherzi 1 or 2
Liszt - Rigoletto (on the short side)
Scriabin - Fantasy
Scriabin - Sonata 4 (should not be shorter than this)

there are a lot of pieces that fit the requirements so here are some:

Liszt: most Hungarian rhapsodies

Liszt-Handel Sarabande and chaconne

Prokofiev etudes op.2

Mendelssohn Variations seriuses

A few suggestions of about the right timing, off the top of my head, and a little outwith conventional repertoire:

Liapunov: 12th transcendental etude
Liszt: Paraphrases on Ernani or on Gounod's Faust
Thalberg: Paraphrase on La traviata (remarkable writing in the Maestoso towards the end)
Schulz-Evler: Arabesques on the Blue Danube
Tausig: Ungarische Zigeunerweisen (great fun!)
