Grieg's "AGITATO"
on: November 13, 2002, 05:01:22 PM
Does anyone know where I can get the sheet music for Grieg's Agitato (1865).I have a recording of Leif Ove Andsnes playing it, and in the programme notes it says it wasn't published until the 1990's.So far, all I have been able to find out is that it was published in 1992, but who it was published by remains a mystery.Any info would be most appreciated. :)
 Thanks

I think there is a Grieg Society around. Probably in Norway. And I think they published around 1920 the complete works... But then again if this is a newly discovered thingie... Dunno... Check with Norwegian state library or Norwegian Music Information Centre or something like that. I am quite sure the latter has got a quite informative website that I once visited in search for some Norwegian music.
Good luck.

David,

Are you sure that "Agitato" is it's only name? Do you have an opus number, or something? I've looked at several complete lists of Griegs compositions, and there isn't anything called "Agitato" It would be a lot easier to find if you could provide an opus number, or anything!

Sarah,

The rest of the pieces on the CD have an opus number, but not this one.I will quote what it says about it in the notes.
"The AGITATO, which remained unpublished until the 1990's, is here given its first commercial recording. The reason for its neglect may have been that Grieg perhaps felt the piano writing was too derivative, too close to that of Chopin and Liszt, to claim the work as his own.But he apparently had no desire that the piece should not be played or he would surely have marked the manuscript with the direction that it was not to be performed, as for instance he did in the case of his symphony."
I  have searched numerous publishers catalogues, but still no luck. :(If you come across any info let me know.
thanks

David,

If you go to www.sheetmusicplus.com and click on the CD music, it will take you to a list of items. About the bottom of page one will be the complete works of Mendelssohn and Grieg. I think that should have your piece... That's about the best I can offer you!!!

Love,

Sarah

I found it eventually :D martin-s, you were right about the NMIC, they knew who the publisher  is, so here's the info for anyone who wants to check out this piece.
The publisher is Peters, the title is "Piano Works IV" and the catalogue number is P3100d.
Sarah and martin-s, thanks for all your help :)

I am glad you found it. The MIC-network is a very useful thing indeed!

Have fun with the "Agitato"
