personality clues
on: June 21, 2004, 04:36:40 AM
I was just reading the thread where they were polling for the gender of forum users.  It was mentioned several times that one can deduce things about personality, age, gender, etc. from how a person writes.  I'm just curious, but what, specifically, does one look for to learn such things?

It usually comes from experience.  For example, I could tell that Comme le Vent was like 17 years old from the way he writes.  Okay, he was 19, but still, he acts like he's a 17 year old (or younger). ::)

Or if a person writes like "u no, like dat?  No sh*t!"  You can infer that the person is a teenager who chats using some kind of instant messenger.  (Refer to the Internet Language thread for other better examples.)

Also, asians (or AZNs) write hella funky, no sh*t! Damn azz mo fo!  I'm refering to specific types of asians, though.  The ones that are currently in vogue right now where everyone asian is acting like a bunch of asian gangsters and talk with this phony asian accent.  They also dress a certain way.  From these cultural phenomena, you can tell a lot from who someone is.

Also, hair style signifies something else.  For example, another of my teacher's students wore her hair with a "line" -  a bang that is gelled or hair-sprayed together that forms a "line".  From this I infer that she is 17 years old, has fallen into the AZN-type crowd (see above), and... I'd rather that not happen.

About how one writes:
If a person writes in a very organized manner, then you can infer that the person is also very logical and is able to convey his ideas in a manner that is easily understood.  Perhaps the reason a person writes in such a manner is because he does not want to be misunderstood, seeing how misunderstandings occur all the time as the advent of language is horrible at accurately conveying things.  That's why we need to evolve to be telepaths.  If you are telepathic to any degree, breed as much as possible.

Also, if one writes in a manner that is not very logical, has sentences that run on and says "you know what I mean?", then he may not be as skilled a writer or know how to express himself very well.  I just described every adolecent teenager, which is redundant, I know. ;D  I'm also kidding, you know what I mean? ;)

How one chooses to dress:
If they are wearing the latest "style" sunglasses, like those fat, goggle-like ones that you see in Victoria's Secret catalogues, then you can tell that the person is very self-concious about how others percieve them and have little to no sence of personal style of their own, hence they rely on what others (in this case, an underwear catalogue) show them to wear.  I've just described most every woman in American society. ;D

Also, ladies, please don't slap me.

About what one writes about:
You can infer from what he writes about what he knows or has experienced.  This is a "no-brainer" though I think this term is useless and inaccurate but quite accurate in lay terms.

I have covered much everything that has popped into my head.  I can tell that you, Liszmaninopin, are a teenager.  If I am wrong, well, then, stop writing like a teenager! ;) ;D

I can also tell Liszmaninopin is a teenager because he said he was on the "how old are you" thread.

Faulty, why dont you show us your skill and tell me something about specific members of the forum.  Stuff like the kinds of clothes we wear, our organization skills, our experience, etc..  Maybe they will see your response and write back saying how right you were.  (Everyone PLEASE be honest)

oh yeah we could have a whole thread on people discussing what they wear and then we can analyse everyone's personality through that!

I hate to rain on anybody's parade, but that is sooo annoying when someone writes like that!!  Even though I use the instant messenger constantly, I don't mind certain abbreviations, like "u,brb, lol etc.  but it is sooo annoying when someone writes like this, for example: "hey every1,i wud like 2 tell u bout my new bf(or gf), but i g2g 4 now, so ill tell u latr" or something like that.  It takes too long to read.  Ok, this is a pet peeve of mine, but when I read the name of a thread, I don't like abbreviations or "chat-speak".  Maybe this is just me.  But I feel much better now that I got that out of my system! LOL  ;D :)

Donjuan, I have never seen how any of you dressed before.  And I can't infer just from writing.  That's like saying I can tell you are typing naked or are under the influence when posting.  Can you tell if I'm posting under the influence or am typing naked?  ;D

About the clothing (this applies mostly to teenagers):

I think people who avoid brand names plastered across their shirt or pants tend to be more down to earth and even have a twinge of rebellion in them. Conversely, people who wear brand names indiscriminantly usually care what people think of them and fashion.

well this seems a fun post and just for the hell of, since faulty_damper here seems to be the leading expert on the analysis of people's writing, and clothing, i'm gonna have a bash at analysing him.  Feel free to return the favour faulty, and don't take offence to anything, i have to wish to cause it.  Its just a bit of fun really.

Well, i think you faulty are young, possibly early 20's despite your apparent disdain for teenagers.  You are bright there's no denying that, but you try too hard in your intelligence, you have an urge to impress people.  I would guess this urge dominates most of your relationships, you really hate it when people dislike you.  You also have a keen perception of the world around you, or at least you like to think you do.  You are very attentive to details and i would guess you are a good listener but not very talkative especially in large crowds.  You are obviously interested in appearance as you brought up hair and clothing in a post simply about writing style.  You are probably very conscious of what you wear and deliberately wear quite plain, boring clothes that wouldn't make you stand out too much.  You are american, not that that's important.  Finally i would guess you are a perfectionist, always pushing yourself and are probably a fast learner and a good pianist because of this.  Oh and you read over your post a couple of times before posting it, lol.

Well, do tell me if i'm right.  I could be way off i really don't know.  As i said its just a bit of fun, i bet you can see at least some of you in that though.

Hey, that's really good.  I am early 20s.  But I have little urge to impress people if you mean as a showoff (Liszt personality).  What do you mean by "dominates relationships"?  I am quite shy in large crowds usually.  I am usually quite attentive to detail, probably from taking art lessons as a kid.  I like it when people like me.  I am not very interested in appearance though I notice that the appearance of others, especially if they purposely try to be "nice looking", are usually aesthetically off in some way (makeup too much, wrong sunglasses, bad clothing/style choice, etc.)  I'm not very concious about what I wear, just what other people wear.  I need a fashion consultant with taste I agree with.  I try to look respectable so I try not to stand out.

" Finally i would guess you are a perfectionist, always pushing yourself and are probably a fast learner and a good pianist because of this.  Oh and you read over your post a couple of times before posting it, lol. "

You have just described every classical pianist.  I just push myself on difficult things; you don't see what's beyond if you stand in the middle of a crowd.  Good pianist?  If I had the technique I probably would be.  Read over my posts a couple of times?  I guess, I do.  I read over what I have just written, then post it.  Then I read it after I've posted it.  Sometimes I edit it if I made a typo that could be misread.

Yes, I just reread my post using the preview icon. ;D

Maybe impress was the wrong word.  I meant in that particular post you wanted to sound impressive, you used the word "infer" a couple of times.  In general life though i meant more that you try hard to get people to see your good qualities, most people do, though i'm sure you actively try not to be cocky.  Thats what i menat by the whole "dominates relationships" thing.  Also you probably agree with people on most things, its part of the same thing.   Anyway enough of the analysis, and yeah i know i don't post much, its just by the time i get to a post there usually isn't much left to say.
